Went to Kyoto for the weekend for a friend’s wedding, though the most memorable part of the trip was a bicycle accident that left me with a broken collar bone.

Before the accident I was able to stop by my favorite place in Kyoto, a Japanese zen garden called Ryoanji. I imagine everyone has this place in the world where you feel alive. Alive in the sense that you are alive in the moment and nothing else matters. I don’t know much about zen but I am sensitive to what my Japanese friends call “power spots”. Ryoanji is one of those places for me. I can spent half of a day there, sitting and gazing at the stones. Drifting between staring at the beautiful garden that is raked every morning by zen monks and softly closing my eyes to concentrate on my breathe.

Then a tourist farts and you snap back to your self-hating roman catholic guilt upbringing self.
