House of Light is an art installation by American artist James Turrell. It is located in Niigata Prefecture. If booked in advance you can reserve the space per night, which I did with a group of friends in December 2016.
I remember the first time I visited one of his spaces I felt something shift in me. Like a switch had been turned. Similar to the vibes I get when sitting at zen garden Ryoanji in Kyoto. Mr Turell is one of my favorite artists and someone who's work I research and seek out. The next time I am in America I want to visit the Roden Crater. Kanye West also bugs out over him which is kinda gross.
I remember being slightly disappointed when seeing these rolls of film for the first time. There was a gap. Most of the photos I took didn't capture what it was like to be in the room. This got me thinking - if I were to do it again what would I change? I think the slow pace of the environment would fit a medium format camera. A tripod also would have been beneficial. I am however happy with how some of the photos turned out, especially the deeply saturated red selfie I took by setting the timer and placing the camera on the tatami mat in the main room of the structure.
